Located on the river Tech, between the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees, the lively town of Am\u00e9lie-les-Bains combines, with a melodic accent, clean air and microclimate, mild temperatures and bright skies (300 days of sunshine a year).<\/p>\n<p>From February onwards, the area is adorned with the first mimosas in bloom and, a unique phenomenon in Europe takes place, the return of the first swallows.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1617375301989{margin-top: 40px !important;}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>A little history<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Am\u00e9lie-les-Bains-Palalda<\/strong> is a French town in the department of the Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es-Orientales and the Languedoc-Roussillon region.<\/p>\n<p>It has signs of occupation since the Iron Age: blocks of gneiss discovered following the flooding of the Tech in 1940 were engraved with signs from this period.<\/p>\n<p>There are various theories about them (cromlech, temple, \u2026) but none are based on verifiable facts. There are hot springs at Bains d\u2019Arles (El Banys) which have been exploited since Antiquity.<\/p>\n<p>The Romans built Roman baths, and a vaulted room and small swimming pool remains today.<\/p>\n<p>Later on, an Abbey was founded by a certain Castellan in the 8th century probably inside the old baths. However, Viking raids during the 9th century forced the monks to move their monastery to Arles-sur-Tech, where it still stands today.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;2224&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;2216&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1615373590637{margin-top: 150px !important;}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Baths<\/strong> called \u2018Els Banys d\u2019Arles,\u2019 remained the property of the Abbot of the Monastery of Arles until 1237 when they were acquired by the Lord of Roussillon and Vallespir, Nunyo-Sanche. Only the parish church of Saint-Quentin remains under the jurisdiction of the Abbot of Arles today.<\/p>\n<p>Around 1670 Vauban ordered a fort to be built above the village to defend the Spanish border, which still stands today. The fort was called Fort-les-Bains (and it bears the same name today).<\/p>\n<p>On 7th April 1840, King Louis-Philippe renamed the village Am\u00e9lie-les-Bains, after his wife, Marie Am\u00e9lie de Bourbon.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][vc_column][vc_separator border_width=&#8221;2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><b><i>Throughout the year the town of Am\u00e9lie and its surroundings offer many attractions<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rallye-sport.fr\/rallye-du-vallespir-2021\/\"><b>The Vallespir Rally<\/b><\/a><br \/>\nVallespir National Rally is one of the rallies of the French Rally Cup and the Languedoc Roussillon Committee Championship.<\/p>\n<p><b>International Festival of folklore in Am\u00e9lie-les-Bains<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The International Festival of Folklore has not stopped growing since 1935 the year that the Occitane Festival was founded, and Festival\u2019s membership of the International Council of Organisations of Folklore Festivals (CIOFF) in 1983 is proof of this. In a whirling kaleidoscope of colours and rhythms, the festival offers awestruck visitors an unforgettable image of the richness of the world&#8217;s cultures and the feeling that peace could be possible between all peoples.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Am\u00e9lie les Bains\u2019 Carnival<br \/>\n<\/b>Like almost all carnivals, Am\u00e9lie-les-Bains\u2019 has very ancient origins which cannot be determined. An article in the &#8220;<i>courrier de C\u00e9ret<\/i> dated March 18th, 1888&#8243; described a cavalcade. In the archives, there are photos of carnival celebrations of the 1900s. However, since 1945 it has been held without interruption.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sudcanigo.com\/traditions\/fetes-de-l-ours\/\"><b>The Bear Festival in Vallespir<\/b><\/a><br \/>\nTraditional and secular popular parties announcing the Carnival\u2019s beginning in Arles sur Tech, Prats de Mollo la Preste and Saint Laurent de Cerdans.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amelie-les-bains.com\/articles-4\/14-16-jeudis-damelie\/\"><b>Thursdays in Am\u00e9lie les Bains<\/b><\/a><br \/>\nIn July and August, the ACS Service of the town organises <i>&#8220;Les Jeudis d&#8217;Am\u00e9lie&#8221;.<\/i> From 5:30pm to 7:30pm, every Thursday, the town streets come alive to the sounds of various brass bands, bandas, and orchestras which fill the streets.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amelie-les-bains.com\/articles-4\/14-87-festibanyes\/\"><b>The Festibanyes<\/b><\/a><br \/>\n&#8220;The Festibanyes were born from some Vallespir Aficionados\u2019 idea. They discovered their passion on the outskirts of C\u00e9ret\u2019s Arena and then spread it elsewhere. Without the transmission of such an activity through the generations, bullfighting would disappear. No bulls, no bullfighting. Without men of courage and skill to face them, no fighting&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tourisme-occitanie.com\/fr\/fiche\/fete-et-manifestation\/fete-de-la-cerise-ceret_TFOFMALAR0660017985\/#:~:text=La%20F%C3%AAte%20de%20la%20Cerise,rassemble%20tous%20les%20producteurs%20locaux.\"><b>The Cherry festival in C\u00e9ret<\/b><\/a><br \/>\nCherry Festival and <i>C\u00e9ret de Bandas<\/i> in May.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasemaineduroussillon.com\/2021\/06\/17\/amelie-les-bains-palalda-fete-de-la-saint-eloi-fete-des-mulets\/\"><b>Saint Eloi: Mule Festival<\/b><\/a><br \/>\nAround the 25th June, Saint Eloi\u2019s day, mules can be seen harnessed with pompoms and studded necklaces trotting to the sound of the Cobla music ensemble with children in traditional costume.
